Gianna Jessen Asks Congress “If abortion is about women’s rights, then what were mine?”

“If abortion is about women’s rights, then what were mine?” Gianna Jessen asked a House Judiciary Committee that question today — and with good reason. Thirty-eight years ago, Jessen miraculously survived a saline abortion. This morning, she told her remarkable story to a House Judiciary Committee investigating Planned Parenthood’s practice of harvesting and selling the body parts of aborted babies — even from those that may have been born alive. Fellow abortion survivor Melissa Ohden also shared her own gripping testimony. Below are the video and transcript of Jessen’s testimony, including some photographs she submitted as evidence. Listen and weep, and pray that God ends this evil.

Transcript of Gianna Jessen’s Testimony to the House Judiciary Committee

Good morning,

My name is Gianna Jessen, and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to testify here today. My biological mother was seven and a half months pregnant when she went to Planned Parenthood, who advised her to have a late-term saline abortion.

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 4.19.06 PMThis method of abortion burns the baby inside and out, blinding and suffocating the child, who is then born dead, usually within 24 hours.

Instead of dying, after 18 hours of being burned in my mother’s womb, I was delivered alive in an abortion clinic in Los Angeles on April the 6th, 1977. My medical records state: “Born alive during saline abortion” at 6 am.

Thankfully, the abortionist was not at work yet. Had he been there, he would have ended my life with strangulation, suffocation, or leaving me there to die. Instead, a nurse called an ambulance, and I was rushed to a hospital. Doctors did not expect me to live.

I did. I was later diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, which was caused by a lack of oxygen to my brain while surviving the abortion. I was never supposed to hold my head up or walk. I do. And Cerebral Palsy is a great gift to me.

I was eventually placed in foster care and later adopted. I forgive my biological mother. Within the first year after my birth, I was used as an expert witness in a case where an abortionist had been caught strangling a child to death after being born alive.

Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, said the following: “The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.” – Margaret Sanger, “Woman and the New Race”

Planned Parenthood is not ashamed of what they have done or continue to do. But we will have to give an account as a nation, before God, for our apathy and for the murder of over 50 million children in the womb. Every time we falter in courage as individuals and fail to confront this evil, I wonder how many lives have been lost in our silence, while we make sure we are lauded among men and do not offend anyone? How many children have died, and been dismembered, and their parts sold, for our ego, our convenience, and our promiscuity? How many Lamborghini’s were purchased with the blood of innocent children? The blood that cries to the Lord from the ground, like that of the blood of Abel. Not one of them is forgotten by Him.

I would ask Planned Parenthood the following questions:

If abortion is about women’s rights, then what were mine? You continuously use the argument, “If the baby is disabled, we need to terminate the pregnancy,” as if you can determine the quality of someone’s life. Is my life less valuable due to my Cerebral Palsy?

You have failed, in your arrogance and greed, to see one thing: it is often from the weakest among us that we learn wisdom – something sorely lacking in our nation today. And it is both our folly and our shame that blinds us to the beauty of adversity.

Planned Parenthood uses deception, the manipulation of language and slogans, such as “a woman’s right to choose,” to achieve their monetary aims.

I will illustrate how well they employ this technique with the following quote: “The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.” – Adolf Hitler

RELATED: Survivor of botched abortion, Melissa Ohden, tells Congress: Planned Parenthood makes sure “failures” like me don’t happen

We often hear that if Planned Parenthood were to be defunded, there would be a health crisis among women without the services they provide. This is absolutely false. Pregnancy resource centers are located nationwide as an option for the woman in crisis. All of their services are free and confidential, and they can be reached by texting: “HELPLINE” to 313131. There is access to vital exams for women other than Planned Parenthood. We are not a nation without options.

Planned Parenthood receives $500 million dollars of taxpayer money a year, to primarily destroy and dismember babies. Do not tell me these are not children. A heartbeat proves that. So does 4-d ultrasound. So do I, and so does the fact that they are selling human organs for profit. Do not tell me this is only a woman’s issue. It takes both a man and a woman to create a child. And to that point I wish to speak to the men listening to me: You are made for greatness, not passivity. You were born to defend women and children. Not use and abandon us, nor sit idly by while you know we are being harmed. I am asking you to be brave.

In conclusion, let me say, I am alive because of the Power of Jesus Christ alone. In Whom I live, move, and have my being. Without Him I would have nothing; with Him, I have all.

Well hear it from someone that should have been aborted. I grew up with my grandmother (my mothers mother) always telling me you shouldn’t have never been born. I grew up hearing my own mother telling me you almost killed me during birth you were a big fat cow. By the age of five I remember wanting to kill my self. I asked my mother why did you have me and her reply was because your Daddy wanted you. It was never because WE wanted you. Today I’m 45 years old and have been through hell and back. Low self esteem and low conference in my self. I know what love is through my wonderful Daddy. I was a daddy’s girl for sure. I have a daughter and son and so greatful for them. I have shown them love and that I wanted them always told them that I was proud of them I had never heard that from my own mother or grandmother. I went through a bad divorce and later remarried to my love of my life. After being happily married for four years and him treating my children as his own sadly he passed away and now I’m lost without him. If I would have been aborted I wouldn’t know the pain I live through each day. But all in all whose gets to decide who lives or dies only one and that’s God

    • David

Ancie, you are wanted and have always been wanted. You are loved and have always been loved. You are exactly who He was hoping for and He is crazy in love with you! I don’t know who looks forward to heaven more, us or God, but I bet it is God because then there will be no doubt in your mind that God has been crazy in love with you from the moment you were conceived.

I understand what happened was awful, and it was by the grace of God that you are here today. However, if it is in Gods plan for an abortion to proceed then it will. You are a product of Gods plan, yet, maybe abortion is apart of Gods plan. If abortion was to be stopped, than our times would go back in history to ‘backyard abortions’ an unsafe, unsanitary practice for all involved. This can’t happen, but it will if we continue to go down this road. No one will ever be able to ‘end abortion’ – you will be able to end legal abortion, but isn’t that just saying you don’t care about a new value of human life? In regards to your statement of Women’s Rights, I’m appalled and shocked. While you may disagree given your own traumatic experience, one others is not your body. There are many, many reasons for abortion and personally I don’t agree with some (like using it as birth control) however, it’s not my place to determine who ‘verifies’ for an abortion. A few reasons that I know from people personally are; rape, lack of money to support a child, too young to have a child and many more reasons along with reasons that really are none of our business. I come from a country that believes in the ‘right of freedom’ yet with all happening, our rights are being stripped from us blindly. Remember it’s a choice for the individual to make. As a Christian, I believe in God and his words, yet, I’m aware that the majority now a days don’t which should be shown in the laws, therefore, our religious opinions should not influence the law, only what actions we do.

Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” It is NEVER God’s plan to destroy- that is the goal of the enemy. God’s plan is for us to learn to love, the way He does, completely, unconditionally, which He has given us the mercy to do through knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is for us to learn to trust Him, and if, as you said, you believe in Him and His words, then you know that He is eager to care for all our needs- even those we don’t even know we have. Even those of a woman (and her child) who never intended to get pregnant. I hear the point you are trying to make about not being able to end abortion- I have no doubt it will continue, whether legal or not. And it is almost impossible for a believer to make an argument that an unbeliever would understand since all the points of argument are rooted in faith in God and His goodness, and respect for ALL of His creation. There are many “debatable” laws out there and many of them, I choose not to debate because they are solely a matter of personal opinion. And while this also is a matter of personal opinion, those opinions decide whether a child lives or dies. So in this, I choose to stand for the child whose rights have been deemed of less importance than the woman carrying him or her.

The Lord intended Sex to be a gift to a couple after marriage not before. When we go against the Lord’s will, that is when everything goes wrong.

A life is God’s gift, no man has the right to take it (even if its your own body), cause it is not ours, it is His, we are His.

He gave us life and it is His will, not ours, to take it.

      • Separation of church and state….

        • I assume you refer to “Separation of church and state…” in it’s most common context, the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment to the Constitution. That particular reference has absolutely nothing to do with the original comment that prompted your response. Try reading the Constitution before you use it completely out of context.

        • Josh Wheaton

Maybe you should try doing some research before you talk so much about

“Separation of church and state”….It’s not in the American Constitution, or the bill of rights.
          It never has been!
It was just in a letter by Thomas Jefferson written to a Baptist congregation,
(Ironically) telling them that they’ll always have the freedom to believe as they wished, without government interference.
But sadly, lately the phrase has been twisted, and contorted, to mean the exact opposite….
So don’t say that it’s a law, or that it it means Church and state have to be separate….It not a law, and they shouldn’t be separate.

There is no “separation of Church and state”!

America was founded on Church and State. But to go with your argument… my State should not pay for YOUR lack of responsibility and carelessness. I should not pay to kill a baby if I do not agree with the practice…

I do not agree that there is NEVER a time for an abortion, but it should not be my financial responsibility to provide because a woman and a man were careless and can’t take care of themselves yet, let alone a baby!

      • Ericka

I mean I have birth control and premaritual sex and I’m pretty happy so far. However, with your logic -those that create us, own us- don’t our parents own our bodies then? Man, this religion stuff is hard

        • Abortion is not a religious issue, it’s a moral issue.
Killing a baby is immoral – flat. No excuses – no exceptions.

          • Josh Wheaton

            Put simply…
            ABORTION IS MURDER!!
            ‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾

    • Jack

What you said is the most idiotic thing I’ve ever read. God doesn’t choose for people to have abortions, people choose that on their own. If a woman can’t support another child then she should consider keeping her damn legs closed, it’s not that difficult, but she’d rather satisfy her insatiable lust for sex.

      • Wes

        High 5 Jack

      • Emma

So then you’re saying that a woman who got pregnant because she was raped and wants an abortion had such an insatiable lust for sex that she asked for the rape to happen? Maybe your mother, in your words, “should have considered keeping her damn legs closed” and not satisfying her insatiable lust for sex. Then the rest of the sane world wouldn’t have to deal with your uneducated, deplorable thoughts.

      • JoJo

What? HER insatiable lust for sex? What about a man keeping his ‘damn pants on’ to paraphrase a counterpart to what you said about a woman ‘keeping her damn legs closed.’? Such class is so hard to find.

        • Melissa

It takes two to tango and God forgives those who have made the decisions they have made.

      • Lu

Jack how dare you comment on a womens issue. Maybe if more men manned up and took responsibilities then we wouldnt have to have to have this talk. I don’t many men saying nooo we might get pregant . Always the womens fault

      • Tracy

Where do you hold men accountable? Maybe if they were to keep it in their pants. Men also push women into those abortions. Can’t always blame just the women

        • Melissa

So True… Lived that. A man pushing cause he didnt want to be a dad

      • Amy

And what of the men? They should be allowed to have all the sex they want while a woman is expected to wait until she’s married?

    • How can anyone claim to be a Christian and take another life. The compassion it takes to love a child even in the case of rape would be nearly impossible with out God. Its been happening since the beginning of time. I do not condone rape, I am just saying how great they are that rise to the challenge to raise a life that was not intended to be. I’m sure they have a seat at the table with one almighty God and shine in His eyes for being so loving to His children. We are all for His pleasure. God Bless

      • Asdfjkl;

Try to see it from the rape victims side, how would a 12-year-old impregnated by her step-father be any good at being compassionate and rising to the challenge? It sounds like your rape victim is an adult with a job and the means to care for a child, but rape victims don’t all look the same.

      • Fullofgrace

The pregnancy only reveals the abuse, an abortion only covers it up and allows it to continue. Forcing a child to have an abortion only opens her up to more abuse, health issues such as breast cancer later on, or perforation more likely due to her age. She may very well never have another child. Adoption and help that would be available to her due to the pregnancy could very well save her life.
Don’t question God’s plan for any of us, we are not able to comprehend it.

    • Brooke,It is not part Gods plan for children to be aborted to even say it maybe be, is heresy . Read the Bible before you lead others astray, for death will be yours forever. The people of America should not be funding abortions with taxpayer monies.

    • Liz S.

Abortion is NEVER in God’s plan–get over it!!!!

    • Michael

Brooke, As a Christian You state that your a product of Gods plan. Gods Plan is LIFE. Nothing anywhere can show me differently. Man can change Gods will by making a decision that is not of God. Show us where Gods Plan is death by man or woman. We live in a falling world full of deception. I don’t believe your intention is deception. I do believe that the teaching your under or have received is false doctrine. I pray for you and the many others that fall in this same religious down fall. Like Paul I pray the scales be removed from your eyes. God Bless you. In Jesus Name

    • Jay Norton

christian retards are the best argument for abortion! the world dosent need any more like you thanks tho!

    • Pat

Birth control or abstinence should always be on the minds of men and women who want to enjoy a few seconds or minutes of physical pleasure. And if a lapse of judgement happens then use the morning after pill before it’s too late. For most people this is the most sane way of preventing unwanted births. Women, your body is your Temple, one most attribute as God’s Temple. Please think before you desecrate it. Protect it, don’t let outside influences harm it…whether it be to for a man to give you “love” or for other reasons.

    • God’s Laws can not be changed or overpowered by man made laws. You can legalize anything but that does not make it moral in the eyes of our Creator! The final judgement day will come when every soul on earth meets their maker. God said, “Thou shalt not kill.” He did not put an age limit on when life begins. From the moment of conception, the life cycle is in process. Why did they give this process a name if it is not meant to signify the beginning of a new life?

I do not object to women who choose not to have children. That is when the term, it is a woman’s body can be used. After conception, it is no longer the woman’s body or life that is effected. It is the new life growing inside of her womb that is in danger of being murdered. There are too many methods of birth control available for women today to prevent a new life from beginning within her body. I support a woman’s right to choose whether or not she wants to become pregnant. That IS her choice but after conception, it is not her body or her choice to murder her pre-born infant.

To me, a baby is nine months old on the day of it’s birth. The biggest step a child takes from it’s mother in on the day a baby is born. On that day an infant can breathe, hear, see, feel, move, digest it’s own food and communicate. A newborn baby needed it’s mother for all life processes prior to the day of it’s birth.

May God have mercy on those who disregard the sanctity of human life from conception forward.

    • Dawn Ludwig

Brook, it is NEVER IN GODS PLAN FOR A CHILD THAT HE KNITTED TOGETHER IN TBE WOMB TO BE ABORTED !!! EVER !! IF HE ALLOWS A CHILD TO FORM, THAT IS HIS PLAN. AND HE DOES NOT MAKE MISTAKES !!!
READ YOUR BIBLE AND PRAY FOR WISDOM !!!
      GOD BLESS !!

  3. Saying abortion may be “God’s will” is the most absurd statement. God isn’t a little fairy, working his magic. Although we disappoint and anger Him, He gives us free will. He wants us to follow His desires in our lives, but allows us to make our own choices. Does this mean there will be no consequences? Of course not! We will answer for the choices we have made. Does God want us to kill the life He gives? What do you think? Should we speak out against this life taking “choice”? Of course! Would one speak out against murder of any other human being? Rape? Robbery? Or should one say, it’s not my business to tell others what they should do? Try spending some time in God’s word. Then you’ll have Christ-like directions to follow instead of what you “think”.

    • Ava Maria

Of course it is wrong and just as you have the freedom to speak your mind, they have the decision to choose. No one decides who makes it past the gates of heaven.

  4. Ava Maria

You are raised to know what God expects. We as women are raised to know what is right and what is wrong. Who are we to stop them from making that decision. We are all adults and make that walk to the same gate Pearly gates.

  5. Esther

Would you kill your newborn because you have choice. The unborn is a human, humans has rights. Murder is wrong, you are killing something, what is it? A cat or a baby?

    • in reading everyone’s opinion on this subject, I have a few questions I must ask. if a child is indeed a person at the point of conception, why then do we not get a tax deduction in the year the child was conceived. our expenses start at that time. our life changes at that time. so why does no one see this as a dependent, as to the men on this issue if your wife of 10 years told you we have two children we can not afford any more kids, so we will no longer have sex. given there is no method of birth control that is 100%. how long would it take you to find a mistress, or divorce her and in doing so leave your children without the support of both parents as god thought it should be. and to everyone who is crying do away with abortions, how many of our countries unwanted children have you adopted? and last but not least what god are you speaking of? their are many different gods from many different religions. who is to say yours is the only one that counts.

      • Emma

Couldn’t have said it better myself Cindy

      • Amy

Bravo!!!! You said it well Cindy!!!

  6. Gram

As far as birth control goes, if you knew the Bible, you’d know the answer. The God whose written word is the Bible, whose Son is Jesus Christ, who was crucified, dead, and buried. Then arose on the third day? Our God counts because HE IS ALIVE! The others are dead

  7. Ruth

You didn’t adopt children how will you know there aren’t people who want to adopt children? There are even babies that were stolen for sale.

People fighting against animal testing and abuse yet hardened their hears against this painful killing process. Because apparently, it is our rights and apparently those babies will suffer. I am born out of accident pregnancy, my dad never intended for me and marriage. If he chose his rights, I will lose my rights to live. How ironic, you are fighting for your rights to kill a baby when your parents didn’t did the same to you that’s why you can even fight for your rights.

  8. Scott

I would never EVER judge a woman who has ever had an abortion or decided to, nonetheless, I’ve never understood why anyone would ever use the argument that a woman can do it she wants with her body when it has to do with the well being of another person’s body, the baby. When it comes to a unborn baby the baby is alive and is a person and has a mind a heart beat a body and a soul. I firmly believe a woman or a person of any gender can do whatever they want with their body. But when it comes to ending the life of an unborn child, why would anybody think they have that right to end that life. If a baby is born prematurely, and Lord willing survives, it’s deemed a person. However if a baby of the same age is aborted it’s not a person?? I just don’t get that. As a Christian this is what I believe but as a person as well I just don’t get it. If someone truly doesn’t want their child there are hundreds, even thousands of willing people that will adopt. Why on Earth would anyone choose to end life when there are so many options that would be a win for everybody. In the case where someone is raped I truly don’t have a good answer I’m not pretending that I do , but even in those circumstances , the child could be adopted . I know someone very personally that had an abortion when they were young and felt they didn’t have any other options. I feel bad for her as she has guilt from it, but I don’t judge her, she is older and wiser and knows now much more than she did then but at the time she felt that was her only option. If we can get past everybody being angry about what they can or can’t do with their body and just do what’s right for a human being, unborn babies, then can’t we just let all the babies be born and find good homes for them. This country spends so much money on ridiculous things I would think we could devise a program that would be satisfactory for mothers expecting a child but they either do not want or cannot afford or for any other reason cannot take care of the child. I truly am not trying to offend anybody as I’m trying to be as level-headed as I can in my comment but also trying to figure out how can we appease everybody and still let the children live. God bless.

  9. LM

Why are any of these ideas being entertained? There is a separation of church and state.

If your pro-life argument has anything to do with religion, your reasoning cannot be taken seriously in our country due to SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. Go to a country without this separation and you have way bigger problems than this.

You are pro-life for religious beliefs; what about people who do not share your religious beliefs?

Also, this post has false information. No one gets an abortion/ no doctor would perform an abortion on someone who is 7.5 months pregnant. They can perform a c-section and a baby can survive at 7.5 months gestation. IF a doctor does perform one this far along, which is ILLEGAL, then yes, I agree, that is murder if the baby can live on its own.

The false statements made in these kinds of articles/posts are frustrating and is what perpetuates illogical arguments.

Not sure why at presidential inaugurations a bible is used and prayers are said, if we must separate religion from “state”. Last time I checked, presidents can overrule state laws and have, so now what?

  11. This whole argument/discussion seems to have started out about Planned Parenthood funding. Not speaking neither religiously nor politically correct, I don’t find it right that my tax dollars or anyone elses tax dollars should be used for something they are against. If you want an abortion then you should pay for it. No one should have to pay for your mistake. In the event of rape, every city and state has victim/witness programs that can assist and should..

  12. Lindylou

I’m using clean language here. Total baloney. Gianna was surrendered for adoption at birth and her BIRTH MOTHER denies this. Find another poster child.

  13. John

This issue is an abomination in the eyes of God and needs reversed now

  14. Lucy Phurr

I’m totally in favor of killing babies I just don’t like giving women choices.

  15. Jaela

I am not pro-life because of my religious beliefs, but because I am alive. So should everyone else be. Being the owner of the womb where a baby grows doesn’t give any woman the right to kill the life that’s inside her, that heart that beats in her just longs to live, just as you and I do, just as the mom does. So how can she play gods on another’s life and decide to kill him/her? If she doesn’t want to be a mom, she should have thought twice before conceiving the child. This is just immaturity. Even in the cases of unwanted intercourse like rape, if a baby is conceived, the mom should just give birth to the baby, and give him to an orphanage. The problem is that we are just way too selfish and only think of what we want and suits us, we think in the box of our tiny comfort zone. More people like Gianna Jessen should stand up! She did what is right in confronting Planned parenthood.
