Charlie Kirk’s Alleged Assassin Was Raised Mormon and Republican, But Registered ‘Unaffiliated’

Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin was raised Mormon and Republican, but he registered to vote as “unaffiliated” with any party, the New York Post reported. And he shot the conservative activist minutes after Kirk had complimented the Mormon church and its adherents.

The man accused of killing Kirk, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, “went to our church when he was younger,” Kristin Schwierman, one of Robinson’s neighbors in St. George, Utah, told the Post.

“I just know that (Tyler) carried himself nicely,” she said. “He was very nice. He was smart. I hear he had a full-ride scholarship (to college) . . . I was shocked that this was even him.”

Video footage of the event at Utah Valley University (UVU) where Kirk was assassinated shows him praising Mormons.

“I love how Mormons send missionaries around the world,” the founder of Turning Point USA told the crowd of about 3,000 students. “I love how polite they are. . . . Half my team is Mormon.”

Kirk added, “Mormons are great people. Let me just say, I’m an evangelical Christian, but I’m not one of those guys that hates on Mormons.”

Prior to the suspect being identified as Mormon, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) issued a statement about Kirk’s tragic death.

“We condemn violence and lawless behavior,” LDS spokesman Doug Anderson said. “We also pray that we may treat one another with greater kindness, compassion and goodness. For members of the Church, we reaffirm the Savior’s teaching and admonition is to love our neighbor.’

The family’s LDS connections played a role in Robinson’s arrest, according to the Post. After his father recognized him from photos released by the FBI and confronted him, the son allegedly said he’d rather kill himself than be arrested.

The father contacted a youth pastor in one of the 12 wards (congregations) attended by St. George’s sizeable Mormon population. That person, who is also a task force officer with the U.S. Marshalls Service, talked with the alleged shooter, according to the Post. Only then did Robinson allow himself to be taken into custody by the FBI.

Robinson’s grandmother, Debbie Robinson, 69, told the Daily Mail that Tyler Robinson was also raised in a staunchly Republican home.

“My son, his dad, is a Republican for Trump,” Debbie Robinson said. “. . . Most of my family members are Republican. I don’t know any single one who’s a Democrat. I’m so confused.”

She also said her grandson, who works in St. George, never spoke about politics with her. She insisted suspicion about Tyler must be a case of “mistaken identity or something.”

However, officials said today that Tyler Robinson was “full of hate” and seething about Kirk’s appearance at UVU.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said at a press briefing that Robinson spoke at length about how he “didn’t like (Kirk) and the viewpoints he had.” Cox added that a family friend heard Robinson vent that “Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate.”

Law enforcement also said a rifle and ammunition found in a wooded area near the UVU crime scene were inscribed with anti-fascist ideology. Three recovered unfired casings said, “Hey fascist! Catch!”; “Oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao,” a line from an anti-fascist Italian song; and “If you read this, you are gay LMAO.”

The headline on this article has changed to highlight that Robinson was registered as “unaffiliated.” That fact was also moved higher in the article to avoid any misperceptions that Tyler Robinson shared his parents’ political persuasion, and TRR added information about the inscriptions on the gun and ammunition. Reporting by the Wall Street Journal that the inscriptions included transgender ideology has since been retracted.

  1. Julie Roys,

This is shameful. You are implying that he *was* a Republican at the time of the murder when the opposite is obviously so.

      1. This article does seem in bad taste, Julie. Kirk was obviously killed for his political views. The killer may have been raised republican but clearly changed his views as an adult.

        1. I read the Roy’s Report and find it interesting, but recognize its progressive slant. Progressives want to deny calling people fascists and Nazi contribute to violence; instead they insist on blaming the 2nd Amendment. Also, the assassin’s roommate is transgender which also is quite interesting. Not quite the conservative Mormon indicated in the article.

        2. Cliff, you don’t actually know that Kirk was killed because he was too conservative. There is some information floating around (not yet confirmed, so inappropriate to report on) that Robinson was a fan of Nick Fuentes, and shot Kirk because he wasn’t far enough right, and Fuentes and Kirk have issues with each other.

His grandma is interviewed and shocked that it could be her grandson because their whole family is MAGA.

It’s also much more plausable that a kid raised in a conservative MAGA household who “gets more political” moves further right- there are hundreds of articles on how young white men are being radicalized. It would also still fit with his family saying he said Charlie Kirk was hateful- because Fuentes is always bashing Kirk.

The truth is, we just don’t know right now, other than he’s a white male raised in a conservative, religious home, which seems to be true of the majority of people who choose to express their anger by killing people like this.

          1. It has now been confirmed that Robinson was in a relationship with a transgender individual. So ya, he was killed for his political/religious views

          2. Did I miss something, I didn’t see MAGA in article. Who’s pushing narrative now? Lots of conservatives,Republicans christians are NOT MAGA!

          3. “he’s a white male raised in a conservative, religious home, which seems to be true of the majority of people who choose to express their anger by killing people like this.”

This was a political assassination. Rfk was killed by a Palestinian who hated israel. Jfk was killed by a Marxist. MLK was killed by a white supremacist. It is patently false that the majority of political assassins are white conservative males.

      2. Julie, Please keep up the solid investigative journalism that you have consistently do. You practice traditional old-school journalism and you bring receipts. So many either have never seen this or have amnesis about what an investigative journakist actually does and the ethics they abide by in their field. The comments of so many who suggest you have either (a) reported the contrary of what is so clearly written, or (b) should just go with other articles printed online either by sheer numbers of people saying it, or by their reputation completely confounds me. It would be like Walter Cronkite of old reporting, “According to Edwin R. Murrow . . .” We don’t need him (or you) to do that, no matter how well-respected either journalist may be! Please stay the course. Many of us are grateful and subscribe because you do so.

      3. It is not speculation…he was a leftist, described as the only leftist in the family; he was “with” a transgender person…this is another shooting because of the issue of transgenderism…

        1. Charles, please cite your (reputable journalism) sources. all of this is currently rumor. just like it’s currently rumor that he’s a groyper.

          1. Mark- partner may be an overstatement- only strong conservative sites are reporting that, which leads me to believe it hasn’t been confirmed independently. Fox has, after all, lost lawsuits about it’s truth and credibility.

        2. And yet this article has not yet been updated/amended to correct the misrepresentation. As more information about the shooter and his radicalization to the Left, and thus the abandonment of his roots and the way he was raised, this article is close to needing to be retracted. And yet, here it remains. Disappointing. The unwillingness to change it reveals the bias.

  2. The title of your article is misleading. He became a member of antifa and became radicalized against his upbringing.

    1. There are unconfirmed reports, citing anonymous sources, saying he was far left. I also have read unconfirmed reports he was far right. We report only what we can confirm.

      1. Julie, what exactly are you trying to accomplish here? Did you do any original reporting for this piece, or are you just internet sleuthing and observing media coverage second-hand like the rest of us while we wait for more complete facts?

The fact that the accused was raised Republican and Mormon tells us about as much about his criminal motives as the fact that he was from Utah. To boldly point this out with no special insight to offer strikes me as disingenuous and unproductive.

  3. One of the theories I saw on Reddit is that the shooter was a “Groyper”.

Groypers are antisemitic, extreme right wing and are involved in online gaming. Their leader is Nick Fuentes (the same Fuentes who had dinner with Trump and Kanye in 2022).

Apparently Groypers hated Kirk because he supported Israel and they obviously didn’t. Groypers and Fuentes also called Kirk a “fascist” (which is very ironic)

The messages the shooter left on bullet cartridges reflects the sort of comments made by Groypers in online gaming.

    1. There are extreme leftist gamers, too. I have family members who are gamers, and I ask them what’s going on in the gamer community they are a part of when things like this happen. They don’t belong to any extremist groups, but there are more left-leaning people on the platforms they play games on. In fact, I saw news that a platform they are on removed gaming content making fun of Charlie’s death. The web is a dark place, and many gamers began playing these games and participating in online communities at a young age with no adult supervision. And many times, the adults who are on these platforms exploit the young or expose them to inappropriate things.

    2. Aware that people must take personal responsibility for their behaviour.
It could well be argued that the shooter was a very confused and psychologically immature young man who has been negatively influenced by a flawed environment and perverse culture which of many things glorifys tribalism, violence and guns.

    3. Just to keep the record straight, Nick Fuentes has not been part of President Trump’s circle at all. In 2022 Trump was being gracious to Kanye West at Mar-a-Lago by agreeing to talk with him at dinner. Unknown to Trump, West brought Fuentes with him as an unwanted guest. Some in DC were angry that Trump appeared to have had dinner with Fuentes but Mr. Trump allowed Fuentes to stay as West’s guest. It is most improbable that President Trump would allow that situation to occur again. Mr. Trump was quite angry that Kanye
put him in that awkward position when he was host at Mar-a-Lago as a private citizen.

    1. So, you know “All Utah Mormons” in order to make such a grandiose sweep of a comment about “Most Utah Mormons,” do you? LOL

  4. I hate that people use these types of articles as a way to look for what group to vilify or blame rather than placing the blame solely where it belongs: the shooter.

    1. Marin,

Large political groups that spread lies and wrong ideologies do share some of the blame when a killer acts out based on those lies and false ideologies.

      1. Cliff – I’m not discounting that harmful ideologies lead to harmful thoughts and harmful behaviors that impact us all.
I am discounting the desperate need to look for someone or something to vilify to the point that assumptions and rumors crowd out the truth.

We saw Nancy Mace hollering about blaming Democrats before we even knew who the alleged shooter was. Now she’s backtracking, with zero apologies for what she put out there with zero proof (and walked away when asking where was this passion when Melissa Hortman was gunned down). We saw Utah’s governor eat his words with his “but it was one of us” retraction. We had HBCU campuses shut down yesterday over threats to “the Blacks for what they did to Charlie.”

I get we are angry and hurting as a nation. But let’s not let that lead to reckless accusations flying around everywhere. More will get hurt that way.

  5. Very misleading title and your explanations fall short. It gives the appearance of hiding the assassin’s radical left views.

  6. Julie: Confirming the suspect aligned himself with radical left ideology is as easy as reviewing the very sources you cite including the NY Post article and the information shared by Governor Cox. If you are still “unconvinced” perhaps you should follow Andy Ngo, a highly respected journalist who was nearly slaughtered by Antifa and continues to be subject to death threats: https://www.ngocomment.com/p/charlie-kirk-assassin-suspect-appears?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

    1. Andy Ngo is not considered a reliable journalist, because he fabricates to fit a narrative rather than report confirmed facts, as Julie does on this site. Examples:

The “milkshake” incident (2019): Ngo gained national attention after claiming he was attacked with “cement milkshakes” by Antifa protesters in Portland. While he was assaulted with milkshakes, and later appeared with injuries, critics pointed out that there was no credible evidence the shakes contained cement. A freelance journalist at the scene also reported Ngo had fabricated his account.
Book allegations: Multiple outlets and critics have meticulously analyzed Ngo’s 2021 book, Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy, accusing it of containing unsubstantiated claims and misleading narratives. For instance, a Reddit user performed a detailed breakdown of the book, accusing Ngo of:
Falsely implying that the 2017 Portland train stabbing, where two people died defending victims of a racist attack, was instigated by an activist.
Exaggerating the violence and danger of Antifa, while underplaying the motivations and context of their actions.
Mischaracterizing innocuous phrases as communist or Islamist “dog whistles”.
Selective editing of protest videos: Ngo has been accused of using deceptive and selective editing of videos to mislead the public about the nature of protests and the actions of left-wing activists. In 2020, journalist Robert Mackey accused Ngo of knowingly lying about his own career and the deceptive editing tactics used by right-wing journalists during the 2020 protests.
Ongoing accusations: Claims against Ngo have continued into 2025. In May 2025, Ngo shared a video on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accusing the Black Lives Matter movement of being “built on lies from the beginning” and using “propaganda to exploit racial tensions”. This was heavily criticized as a continuation of his pattern of pushing misleading, far-right narratives.

    1. Deb, I strongly expect evangelical…. we see much inciteful, inflammatory speech including even overt references for violence from this community which right now has this country in a death grip.

  7. There is conflicting information on the killer’s political views. Family members say he expressed anti-Republican views. It is not unheard of for college kids to change their political views as they are exposed to liberal professors at liberal colleges, and had never properly raised by their parents to discuss and undermine opposing political ideas.

The same is true of the internet. A former classmate posted a video with his yearbook I think it was and described him growing up as a Reddit kid. Reddit is far left and heavily censored. He said when kids are online they spend too much time exposed to one set of views. Anyone familiar with Reddit politics knows how conservative comments get deleted and posters banned.

Besides being radicalized by Reddit, Robinson may have also been mentally handicapped. The idea that Kirk was full of hate is ridiculous. Kirk was never angry in public, to my recollection, never spewing vitriol, and never trolling.

In fact I don’t know a single conservative politician or activist who was as restrained as Kirk in his writing and speaking. He showed respect to people he disagreed with, firstly by agreeing to speak with them, and then listening to them.

Charlie Kirk was the polar opposite of Tyler Robinson. Instead of showing up on campus with a question like a Democrat, he showed up with a rifle like a fascist.

    1. What Kirk did was Stochastic terrorism. This is the use of rhetoric to inspire “lone wolf” acts of violence where the violence is statistically probable but individually unpredictable and the speaker’s intent is ambiguous. Influential figures demonize a person or group using indirect, inflammatory language that can be plausibly denied, but this creates a climate where a susceptible individual commits a violent act. The originator of such rhetoric remains legally insulated from accountability because the language does not constitute direct incitement, even if it results in a security threat.

Any google search will show you that Kirk often demeaned and dismissed women, anyone non-white, Muslims and the LGBTQIA community in ways that didn’t directly tell people to harm them, but gave them permission to consider them less than, and ultimately less than human.

Being calm and retrained doesn’t mean he wasn’t hateful, it just means he was careful in rhetoric.

      1. Jen Manlief:

AI is interesting, isn’t it? It seems to be where you got your info.

“Stochastic terrorism describes the use of public, demonizing rhetoric by influential figures to incite ideologically aligned individuals to commit acts of violence that are statistically predictable but individually unpredictable. This “indirect enabling” creates a climate where isolated acts of “lone wolf” violence are more likely, while the instigator maintains legal insulation through plausible deniability and the lack of direct incitement. The term originated with mathematician Gordon Woo and highlights how inflammatory language, amplified by media, can lead to real-world violence without explicit calls for it.”
        AI

The problem you have in this case is that Charlie Kirk did NOT use “demonizing rhetoric.” He simply spoke the truth. Once again, if you have difficulty accepting the concepts and ideas he shared, you likely have trouble with the concept of sin as described and explained in God’s Word the Bible.

I have often wondered where you actually stand when it comes to sin and God’s condemnation of it?

        1. Cynthia –

Not all Charlie Kirk said was truth. Some of it what his opinion masked as truth, including statements like how the Civil Rights Act was a mistake and MLK was an awful man. That is his OPINION. It may be an informed opinion, but it is still an opinion. There are others who are equally informed who have different opinions as well.

A huge problem we have as a society is the difficulty in knowing the difference between fact and opinion. It allows so many talking heads to walk around posing as journalists and truth tellers, when their words should be taken as merely their OPINION.

  8. Julie thank you for reporting on this beautiful soul Charlie Kirk! He was so magniumus to lovely & freely encouraged hearly kids, young peoples & others pov indoctrination, victimization to get them thinking & present an alternative pov by sharing his godly point of view! He was patient, kind, positive, energetic, humble, meek, & generous never thought of himself more highly than he should! He will be missed & one of kind leader. Mormon youth pastor with his dad probably appealed to shooter by involving human side of his religion, brothers, mom, grandma & dad that love him? Shooter was on the same “Discord APP” as DJT shooter Crooks. God hates those who sow discord. Premeditated killing & follow through is absolutely from wrong relationships & demonic. Sadly, you can see many depraved humans in social media & in the crowd that are celebrating killing this unarmed, unsuspecting father whose voice was used to appeal to humanity encourage faith, family and open discussions for political pics. Morman religion is a cult religion strayed from God’s true gospel teaching & secretive leadership! The truth will set all people free! I pray TPUSA legacy’s will continue it’s movement to inspire & combat all that promotes terrorism & hate like the shooters! Government administration is set on hunting the criminal terrorists i.e.Antifa hunted now! Erica Kirk’s msg yesterday was lovely & powerful! Praying God help heal our broken hearts & heal our land & world!

  9. The sad part is CK was a sacrifice to further divide us. Did you see his widows statement? Surrounded by Trump hats but why? Interesting that he was assassinated on live TV the day before 9/11. More trauma, more fear, more control is coming. This is deeper that a lone shooter, think deeper.

  10. And Ted Bundy was raised in Methodist (Christian) household and converted to LDS as an adult (Mormonism) and was baptized in the Mormon Church. And Jodi Arias converted to LDS as an adult. And John Wayne Gacy was raused Catholic and was an altar boy in his youth. So . . . what’s the point to use their religion? To vilify a group of people without justification? Or just to show we are all sinners?

  11. The political and religious environment in the 21st-century United States parallels that in 1st-century Israel. The Pharisees, religious leaders(Sanhedrin), and Zealots were extreme nationalists, loved money, hated paying taxes(who doesn’t), and were hateful toward Rome. They were also hateful of Christ. Jesus did not represent a 1960s hippie in the USA, but he did represent a “hippie” vis-à-vis the Mosaic Law and the non-violent approach of living a godly life. How can all of these evangelical leaders be wrong? The same way they were during Christ’s time. The same way they were throughout most of Biblical history, which is Israel’s history. Jesus accused the Jewish leaders of being responsible for the death of their own prophets, MT 23:37; Luke 11:47-51. The false prophets were nationalists as well, to the point where they ignored Yahweh and His prophets and trusted in false prophets.

  12. Prosecuting Tyler Robinson (if it comes to that) for the killing of Charlie Kirk, will pose immense challenges if any semblance of a “fair trial” is to be had. This because of the complexities of the USA’s deepening and intensifying polarisation crisis.

    1. I’m struggling to see your point or its relevance, Colin. Is it that civilization is hard? As we’ve seen this last week, it most certainly is, and it is more fragile than anyone thinks. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try, or that it is impossible to achieve. To suggest otherwise is nothing more than one more tired, cliché online invitation to despair.

      1. Jay. . My thinking is, that polarisation (the members of a collective variously committing to and identifying with mutually contradicting perspectives, so that shared address of anything tends towards impossibility) is the nub of collective difficulties, in the USA and many other societies. The groupings for and against everything associated with DT, exemplify the current default outcome; where useful discussion between those perspectives is tending towards impossibility; and where those two groupings combined perhaps includes the majority of US citizens.
From those two perspectives, everything likely to be involved in prosecution and defence of the alleged person, is fundamentally open to being contested. That squarely points up difficulties in jury selection, admissible argument, and all else associated with fair trial process.

      1. Jane King:

You’re right. Anyone can make a YouTube video and it doesn’t make it true.

You should talk to the reporters at the Wall Street Journal, Axios, CNN, Fox News, and The Washington Times. All are reporting that Tyler Robinson lived with a transgender female who is cooperating with the FBI. Perhaps they’re all wrong?

  13. This video discusses new information regarding the motive of Tyler Robinson, the killer of Charlie Kirk.
Key points from the video include:
Robinson was identified by a high school friend as a leftist who became more extreme in his political views over time [00:19]. The friend noted that Robinson was the only leftist in his family of “very hard Republicans” [00:32].
The video claims that the killer’s motives were based on “political terrorism” [00:10]. The bullet engraving with arrows was a reference to the video game Helldivers 2 [00:54].
The video also claims that Robinson was a confirmed transgender activist and was in a relationship with a transgender person [01:10].
The video mentions a source told them that Robinson’s transgender partner, described as a “male transitioning to female,” is cooperating with the FBI [01:38]. Additionally, the FBI reportedly has text messages and other communications between the two individuals that helped solidify Robinson as the shooter [01:44].

    1. Literally anyone can make a youtube video. actual journalists have to confirm facts with multiple sources, which is why no reputable news source is reporting this- it’s not yet confirmed.

  14. Jen Menlief:

Sorry, but the Wall Street Journal, Axios, Fox News and CNN are all reporting the same information:

Tyler Robinson lived with a man transitioning into a woman. Stated differently, he lived with a transgender individual.

Do you think this might have anything to do with the pro-trans engraved ammunition the FBI found?

    1. Interesting how now so many believe these mainstream outlets when it supports what they agree with.
When these same outlets present something anti-Trump or anti-conservative, then suddenly it’s the “evil mainstream media is out to destroy us.”

I just remember that media is a business. All are looking for clicks and views to drive revenue, hence why they are trying to be the “fastest” to report some “breaking news”, and often have to course correct later, undermining their credibility.

I have intentionally stepped back until the dust settles and there’s been more time for all to research and confirm leads. In the meantime, it’s pray pray pray. Slowing down and not being quick to accuse.

  15. I disagree greatly when Charlie Kirk says, “its great that they send Mormons out”. yes, they are sent out telling a lie. and half his staff is Mormon? They believe in Christ virgin birth, perfect life, atoning sacrifice for sins, and resurrection. However, their understanding differs from traditional Christianity by not believing in the Trinity, viewing the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost as three separate beings united in purpose. Additionally, Mormons believe Jesus was the firstborn spirit child of God and an earthly mother, and the Book of Mormon records his post-resurrection ministry in ancient America. Similarities with Traditional Christianity as the Son of God: Mormons believe Jesus is the divine Son of God and the Savior of all humanity. Unlike the traditional Christian doctrine of one God in three coequal persons (the Trinity), Mormons believe the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three distinct beings, united in purpose but separate in essence. Mormons believe Jesus was the first spirit child of God and a “heavenly mother,” making him an older brother to all humanity. They also believe God the Father was once a man who achieved divinity. Mormons accept the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants as additional scriptures alongside the Bible, which provides a more complete account of Christ’s life and ministry. Christ’s Ministry in the Americas:
    .

  16. Political Social Media is a septic tank full of unconfirmed speculations, outrageousness based on conspiracy theories designed to cause rage and confusion and devoid of anything you would call the Fruit of the Spirit. If this particular story does not prove that, than nothing can. Flesh and blood is not our enemy. Our enemy are powers that only God can see that are busy stirring up rage on both sides. A spirit of violence that works on the children who love violence regardless of their political orientation. This is the first spark, two more are coming.

  17. Too many people want to believe Charlie was killed because of his “Political” views. This is incorrect. Charlie was taken off the board because of his Christian views. He was leading many thousands to the fundamental belief in Jesus Who is the Christ, The Word made flesh, The Creator of all things visible and invisible, The Only begotten Son of the One true G-d and the father of all lies could NOT have anymore of that. How and when and what he whispered in the ear of this poor lost confused young man, we’ll never know as well he himself most likely didn’t know. Get it straight people!! This is a spiritual battle not a political one. I’m rather certain the call to “Come Up Here” draws nigh. Look up!

    1. Dr. Peter J Oehler: “…the father of all lies could NOT have anymore of that. How and when and what he whispered in the ear of this poor lost confused young man, we’ll never know as well he himself most likely didn’t know. ”

Me: If your claim is accurate, Dr., about what “we’ll never know…” and what “…he himself most likely didn’t know”, then please explain the claim of how YOU DO KNOW that it was all orchestrated by “the father of lies”?

      1. The answer lies in the next few lines, as I’m sure you read but, perhaps. did not fully comprehend. This is a “Spiritual Battle”! If you know the G-d who created you then you will understand. If not you can read all about it in His Book.

  18. Do you read conservative journalists, like the high-quality ones at Townhall . com? The evidence is abundant that he is / was in a relationship with a trans kid. A neighbor saw them kissing and holding hands and overheard them discussing surgery dates. Twitchy dot com, a harder-hi9tting and humorous conservative website, has a video of journalists, some with British accents, questioning the young adult neighbor, who reports what he saw. It’s a pity your research was incomplete. I have defended you at my website drjimsebt.com. I still like your reporting, tho.

  19. Who was Charlie Kirk? Who is Tyler Robinson? Did Tyler Robison murder Charlie Kirk? If he did, why did he?
What are various persons and groupings making of the event? What are the consequences of what sense people make of the event, in the present and going forward?
Can we ask and answer all those questions, and others associated; in a responsible manner, with a concern for evidence, facts and truth? Or, are we in the grip of a collective maelstrom that devours motivation to ask and answer real questions?

    1. Don’t know if we can ask those questions with clear heads right now, Colin, but at this very early stage I guess I haven’t yet given up hope. My prayer is that public servants in law enforcement and the courts will (be allowed to) do their day jobs, despite whoever currently leads them or has in recent years tried to defund them. My other prayer is that, as the legal process plays out, anyone trapped in an endless cycle of such questioning will, as a byproduct, find an off-ramp. That they would be pleasantly surprised by what flawed human beings and their inherently imperfect institutions can produce.

It doesn’t take decades’ worth (in human terms) of exposure to contemporary philosophers or literary lights to understand that skepticism is often a slippery slope to cynicism. When someone is incapable of believing that the truth is knowable or that anyone can be trusted to be truthful, that’s fertile ground for conspiracy theories and all the other kinds of pseudo-intellectual slop we see online, especially in social media, including in comments sections like this one. Nihilism, all the way down, which serves no good purpose. And to think: We’re training AI on all this!
