Prominent Southern Baptist theologian and seminary president Al Mohler has been hospitalized with blood clots in both lungs, and his family is asking for prayer.

On Saturday morning, Mohler, 63, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, announced via social channels that he had been hospitalized the day prior.

According to the statement, he was hospitalized with a diagnosis of bilateral pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in both lungs. The statement added that he is “receiving excellent care” and “responding well to treatment.”

The Mayo Clinic describes a pulmonary embolism como “a blood clot that blocks and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung” and notes it “can be life-threatening.”

al-mohler has led Southern Seminary as president since 1993, and helped launch an undergraduate school, Boyce College, in 1998. He also hosts “The Briefing,” a current events podcast popular among Southern Baptist pastors and leaders.

In fall 2021, Mohler partnered with evangelical-led news outlet Revista MUNDO para launch WORLD Opinions, a move which ha sido controversial among some readers.

A website for The Briefing señalado Mohler’s absence in a Monday statement, adding that he looks forward to returning “in coming days.”

Mohler underwent a similar incident 16 years ago. In January 2007, he developed pulmonary emboli following a surgery and had to be hospitalized after experiencing what he descrito as “unrelenting pain.” Months later, he reported he era “gaining strength” and experienced a full recovery.

Regarding his current hospitalization, Mohler stated that he and his wife, Mary, would “appreciate your prayers for a full and speedy recovery.”

  1. It is accurate to say the move to add “world opinions” was controversial. There is great power in great journalism – informing, and letting the reader decide what it means. Adding commentary as a focus can be a distraction from what World does best. As one member of the “jury,” I’ve not yet reached a conclusion about that.

    1. World has published commentary and opinions for as long as I’ve read it.

They just didn’t give it a name.

I believe naming it for what it is, is the right approach.

  2. I am sorry he is going through this. But maybe during his recovery he will have time to reflect on his
use of his power since he became the President of Southern Seminary.
