Just eight days shy of Election Day, 31-year-old political activist Charlie Kirk addressed a sea of college students in glaring-red MAGA hats at Grand Canyon University, near downtown Phoenix.
Sporting a black T-shirt emblazoned with “xy = man” — a confirmation of where he stands on the GOP’s 2024 litmus test issue — Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA as a college student in 2012, was interrupted as his audience erupted into a rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Afterward, students grabbed up TPUSA swag that said “Republicans are hotter” and “dump your socialist boyfriend.”
“Gen Z is waking up … and voting,” Kirk posted on X later that day. “WATCH.”
Kirk’s fall 2024 “You’re Being Brainwashed” tour is an effort advertised as a way to help students “challenge left-wing indoctrination on college campuses.” TPUSA has already signed up nearly 800 college chapters, but the event at GCU, established by Baptists but now calling itself interdenominational, is part of Kirk’s recent push to populate evangelical Christian campuses with TPUSA chapters.
Since 2020, TPUSA chapters have appeared at more than 45 Christian colleges or universities, at least 35 of them affiliated with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the largest association of Christian schools. Only 21 chapters at Christian universities appear currently active, however, with even fewer officially recognized by the universities themselves.

Expanding to Christian colleges, some scholars warn, may divide their campuses. The group, whose sitio web says it plays “offense with a sense of urgency to win America’s culture war,” gained notoriety in 2016 for its professor watchlist, cual prompted harassment of faculty at secular as well as Christian colleges, who, TPUSA said, “advance leftist propaganda.”
Kirk has disputed the results of the 2020 election, cuestionado the qualifications of Black pilots, llamado George Floyd a “scumbag” and said a Bible verse about stoning gay people to death is “God’s perfect law.”
“The Democrat Party supports everything that God hates,” Kirk dijo at a recent campaign event he organized for Donald Trump. TPUSA did not respond to requests for comment.
Students at Christian colleges who have launched or joined TPUSA chapters said in interviews this fall that the group helps build community and gives them a place to discuss conservative values.
“They say that we are racist and homophobic,” said Payton Stutzman, president of the TPUSA chapter at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, without specifying who “they” referred to. “We’re really not. We really just want to get together and have a good time. The main things we support is a secure border, a good economy, and the freedom to raise our family the way we think is right. We are not here to push anybody’s beliefs down their throats.”
Sarah Stock, a junior political science major at Vanguard University, a Christian university in Orange County, California, started a TPUSA chapter last fall as an outlet, she said, for political dialogue in what she described as an otherwise apolitical campus.
Last year at a screening of Matt Walsh’s “What Is a Woman,” a film in which Walsh, a controversial podcast host, talks about transgender issues, approximately 100 students attended. Among them was a group of friends who came up to debate the TPUSA members during a Q&A session.
“We all were like, I respect you have this opinion, and it’s great that we can talk about it,” said Stock, who said that after momentarily growing tense, the two groups ended up laughing together. “It was just this mutual understanding that you can love other people and still disagree with them.”
Generally operating in more conservative environments, TPUSA chapters on Christian campuses face less opposition than peers at secular universities but aren’t exempt from controversy. In 2023, Whitworth University put their TPUSA chapter on probation after a free speech event encouraged students to write whatever they wanted on a beach ball, vulgarities included. A year earlier, a now-defunct TPUSA chapter at Calvin University in Grand Rapids drew backlash after advertising a Kanye West-themed event in the wake of West’s antisemitic comments.
“The tone of TPUSA social media, and the tone of Charlie Kirk’s rhetoric, to me, it seems there’s a conflict there between kind of that brand, and the more thoughtful political discourse that Christian colleges historically have been working to cultivate,” said Kristin Kobes Du Mez, professor of history and gender studies at Calvin University.
Since TPUSA launched its Faith Initiative in 2021, which partners with churches to host religious conferences, Kirk’s rhetoric about “reclaiming the country for Christ” has grown more bold, earning Kirk the label of Christian nationalist.
“If the church does not rise up at this moment, if the church does not take its proper role, then the country and the republic will be gone as we know it,” Kirk dijo at a May 2021 TPUSA Faith event at Dream City Church in Phoenix.
Kyle Spencer, whose 2024 book “Raising Them Right” chronicles America’s conservative youth movement, is unequivocal in describing Kirk as a Christian nationalist.
But political commentator Isaac Willour, a graduate of the Christian Grove City College, called it an “obvious jump” to conflate “those who have a pop interest in TPUSA talking points” with “the actual radical right.” TPUSA, he noted, has distanced itself from radical conservatives such as Nick Fuentes y Morgan Ariel.
“There’s a very easy trap to fall into … that advocating for Christians who meaningfully use any kind of political process, anything that’s not really quietism, is Christian nationalism,” said Willour.
Stock said, “It seems like there’s a high demand for Christian nationalism in the media, but I think there’s a pretty low supply of it.”
Before TPUSA Faith, there was the Falkirk Center for Faith and Liberty, a think tank located at the evangelical powerhouse Liberty University in Virginia. The brainchild of Kirk and then-Liberty President Jerry Falwell Jr., the center, founded in 2019, brought Trump allies such as Eric Metaxas and Rudy Giuliani to campus but ultimately lost steam as Falwell encountered scandal and eventually renunciar.
Kirk’s legacy lives on in the school’s TPUSA chapter, which ballooned from 175 members over the summer to over 600, according to Stutzman, crediting the election. (He also touts its pickleball, trivia and Shrek-themed “drain the swamp” movie nights.) Voter registration has been a top priority.
“Right now, Virginia is in a spot where it could flip,” said Stutzman, who was doorknocking for the Trump campaign as he spoke to media. “While we can’t endorse anybody, we can support our values, and we can work with college Republicans and other clubs that can endorse people, and we can provide them resources.”
Many TPUSA Christian college chapters have hosted debate watch parties and have plans for election night gatherings. At Liberty, local and federal politicians are expected to attend the chapter’s formal election night gala.
JJ Glaneman, a sophomore at Duquesne University, a Catholic university in Pittsburgh, told media he’d also recently been doorknocking for Trump and GOP Senate candidate David McCormick.
Duquesne’s TPUSA chapter is unofficial. After attending TPUSA’s multi-day AmFest event in Arizona in December 2023, Glaneman filed to start a formal chapter in January but was denied by student government, who, Glaneman said, cited TPUSA’s values. Instead, Glaneman has co-founded a chapter of the 132-year-old College Republicans that they use as a “shield,” he said, to host conservative events on campus.
According to Matt Boedy, a professor of religious rhetoric at the University of North Georgia, TPUSA’s “star-studded” conferences, big-name speakers and viral political debates make TPUSA a more attractive option than a College Republicans chapter.
There’s also TPUSA’s funding. Tax filings from June 2023 showed that TPUSA took in $81.7 million, up from $2.05 million in 2015. Stock said that while her group could apply for “like $50 a year” from Vanguard, “we just get everything from Turning Point.”
Claire Bettag, a senior at St. Mary’s Notre Dame, said the Indiana Catholic school negado her attempt to found a chapter in 2022 due to TPUSA’s messaging on LGBTQ+ issues.
Despite the rejection, Bettag has maintained an unofficial TPUSA chapter and a College Republicans club at the school and said TPUSA encouraged her to speak out when St. Mary’s decided to offer open enrollment to applicants “who consistently live and identify as women,” which included transgender students.
“We had met with the school board, the president, the vice president of the college, and we started multiple protests and did a lot of activism to get this policy reversed,” said Bettag. “I have confidence now to speak out about my conservative values that I never thought that I could ever have, and it’s because Turning Point really backed me up along the entire process.”
Saint Mary’s reversed its decision a month later, by which time, Bettag said, her unofficial TPUSA chapter had grown to 75 members.
Catholic University of America has also been hesitant to welcome TPUSA to its campus, as have some Protestant colleges. In 2021, Point Loma Nazarene University, a Church of the Nazarene school in San Diego, and Taylor University, an evangelical school in Upland, Indiana, said the national group conflicts with their mission statements.
The Grand Canyon University event shows that TPUSA’s efforts to enroll Christian students aren’t slowing down, and while Spencer said it’s still a question whether the campaign will translate to votes, Stutzman, at Liberty, said not all gains are political.
“Ultimately, at the end of the day, it’s not just political warfare,” he said. “It’s spiritual warfare that we’re fighting as well.”

I can rightly predict that this “leftist” label you glibly apply to other Christians, means that their theology doesn’t meet YOUR particular flavor of Christianity’s standards of what and who a True Christian really is. You say Trump is “a sinner like all of us”, but I wonder if you believe that. Because you justify, deflect, and defend ANYTHING he says or does. Throughout our interactions, I have pointed out how Trump paid fines for housing discrimination (public court record), lied about how the Central Park jogger is dead (she’s not) as part of falsely accusing a group of young men of murder (DNA exonerated them), has been unfaithful in three marriages (public Playboy mansion visits and adulterous relationships), curses and calls names (on video), denied the need for God’s forgiveness (on video), and now is using violent rhetoric about Cheney (and other “enemies from within” to use his words, also on video). NOT ONCE have you acknowledged ANY of this is against God’s Word (which is to be our standard). Yet you stand ready with scripture to call out sin when it’s committed by a leftist.
This has been my concern for the church. It’s fine to have a political party or candidate you prefer. Yet when we defend and justify ANYTHING the candidate says or does, we are wading into dangerous territory. When we say “whatabout (what “the other side” said/did)”, we are playing the worldly game of moral relativism. Even UNBELIEVERS know when Trump is acting against God’s Word; what do WE look like when we justify it?
The world is watching us reduce the church to being little more than an extension of the GOP with Bibles in our hands that we pull out when convenient. Then we blame the media, Satan, the leftists – everyone but OURSELVES – for the declining influence we have in the US.

In another comment you remind us God hates sin. Let us remember that includes dissension, bearing false witness against your neighbor and stirring up hatred among brothers. Do you not notice Trump does at least one of these things every time he speaks publicly?

I can’t say if she is or is not a believer, but I think she has an attitude of tolerance for other beliefs which is the most we can hope for in a pluralistic society where freedom of religion is foundational.
Tricia, Kamala Harris is not a friend of Jesus nor is she sympathetic to Christian values and principles. She wants the abortion of the least of God’s beloved children to be legal up to and including the ninth month of pregnancy. She supports transgender surgery for children. She embraces and supports drag queen performances at libraries and other child welcoming events. Harris wants the exemption currently afforded most Christian doctors and Christian medical facilities from performing abortions to be rescinded. This goes against the tolerance you say Harris extends to multiple faiths. She doesn’t champion the devout Jews and Muslims, who are aligned with Christians in wanting the children of this nation to be safe from those who wish them harm, both physical and emotional. In Isaiah God said the children being sacrificed in the fires of the god Moleck were his. We destroy and maim our little ones at our peril. Jesus loved children and warned that it would be better to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around ones neck than to hurt his children. So, no, Kamala is not a champion of people of faith and she certainly isn’t a champion of children.
Cathie – Much of what you write is actually about giving and respecting people’s freedoms – even freedoms that our Christian faith oppose – because our faith is NOT the law of the land.
If you don’t like drag queen shows – don’t go. But understand drag queens have the right and freedom to perform. If you don’t want your kids to go to a drag show – don’t take them. But understand some parents believe differently, and have the right and freedom to take their child to a show as they see fit. Dragging the government into who can perform or who can take their child – according to your faith – is a huge overreach and misuse of the government.
Certain sects of the Jewish faith believe that life begins at birth, not conception; should it be their right to seek care accordingly (assuming their state allows), even if it disagrees with Christianity? Not an easy answer.
Many women seek out abortions for life-saving reasons and should be treated accordingly. Since the reversal of Roe, dozens of pregnant women in distress have been turned away from emergency rooms, left to bleed out and/or miscarry in public. Many doctors are too afraid to act, or are citing religious reasons to deny these women care; some are DYING. Where’s the “pro life” in this? This needs to be fixed, and it’s a fine line when practicing your faith (which is a doctor’s right) leads to the harm or death of another.
This isn’t as black and white as many think, and to claim “she’s not promoting it the way my Christian faith sees fit, so she isn’t a friend of Jesus” is a stretch.

That’s right. Yet, he is 30+ worth well over a million dollars and at last count has two kids, if I’m right. Seems like Charlie can afford way more kids than he has today. In fact his buddy, Benny Johnson, at one of the TPUSA conferences has a clip saying that Christians should have more kids than they can afford. Yet Benny also is 30+ worth over as million and has 1-2 kids. So, why don’t they practice what they preach? Or better yet, preach what they practice.

Jesus chose a tax collector and a Simon the zealot (who fought to overtake the Roman government) as His disciples. Jesus Himself called King Herod a fox. John the Baptist was killed for calling out Herod’s sinful marriage.
If followers of Jesus stay out of politics, that only leaves people with no Biblical worldview to make the laws that all of us live under.
May we seek God for wisdom in engaging in ways that honor Him.
All examples provided above, including John the Baptist (Luke 16:16) are under the Old Covenant. And, before the “kingdom of God”, as Jesus presented it. Even Jesus’ statement about Herod was a comment in response to the Pharisees (Luke 13:31-32), not addressing anything in government. If the Pharisees hadn’t brought Herod up, neither would have Jesus. Where did the Apostles DIRECTLY address politics or government as part of their Christianity. In fact, the Apostle Paul left the “kingdom of Caesar” (Matthew 22:15-21) to God, and focused on dealing with sin in the church (1 Corinthians 5:12-13). Kudos to The Roys Report for following Paul’s priorities and addressing what are predominantly church issues.
The Kingdom of God (John 18:36) is radically different from anything on earth, including Israel. Under the New Covenants, there is no such concept as a “christian nation”. So, invoking Old Covenant prophetic behavior as justification for what is being done today, is a stretch at best, if not contrary to the New Covenant. But this struggle with the concept of the Kingdom as Jesus preached it, isn’t new. Even Jesus’ own disciples struggled with it (Acts 1:6).

These are the scriptures for people who say politics and Christianity do not mix. 1 Corinthians 7:21, “Are you a slave? Don’t let that worry you – but if you get a chance to be free, take it,” and Galatians 5:1, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Jesus died for us to be free in every area of our lives. Therefore, freedom should be applied to every aspect of life in our spirit, soul, body and circumstances in whatever power we have to do so lawfully. What candidate is offering us FREEDOM to continue to live how GOD TELLS us to live? Does God like compromise? How did that turn out for the ancient Israelites? Does God want us to live in deception regarding genders, indoctrinate our innocent children to perversion, and worst of all, take their lives at any stage of birthing? Does God really embrace all religions? Show me the scriptures! Which candidate is standing for Godly principles? Freedom is precious, so TAKE your freedom through voting for the person who is going to protect it! God never said He would use perfect people. He said He would work through people who are imperfect, and He did. The Bible is full of the accounts of imperfect peoples’ lives whom He worked with. Please remember, freedom that is taken away is very difficult to gain back. Just ask those in countries who have lived through communism and dictatorships. The first thing they throw out is the Church that truly stands and acts upon biblical principles.
Liz Chaney and the political warmongers who benefit financially from the military industrial complex (which President Dwight Eisenhower warned against) send thousands of Americans to fight in wars. As Marines, both my sons were sent to fight in Iraq. Thanks be to God they returned safely but thousands didn’t. If Liz and Dick Chaney are now voting Democrat it’s only because they approve of the multiple wars being fought worldwide under the current administration. There would be thousands of families spared the loss and maiming of their loved ones if the political warmongers of this nation (in both political parties) were forced to contemplated the horror of staring down bullets. May God bless the men and women who serve this country and May He comfort the injured.

The downfall of the American family is not embodied in a woman voting her conscience in a public election! Not unless the only “correct family” is husband as Lord and Master who dictates every decision made by his wife. Which is what patriarchal Christian teachings promote, as do some complimentarians. Yet Jesus did not speak of patriarchy as a core issue. Accordingly many born again believers do not hold to such beliefs.
Charlie Kirk is clearly in the patriarchal camp and is promoting a Christian nationalist agenda. Beware my friends, if such people as Kirk get the political power they seek all will be forced to follow their particular set of beliefs regarding what it means to be Christian. We should soundly reject this- the separation of church and state is for our protection so we have freedom to pursue God, or not, each according to one’s conscience. This is a freedom worth standing up for.

We report on the church, mainly evangelical and Protestant churches with orthodox doctrine. Those churches don’t tend to be partnered with the Left. But if a major movement within these churches starts partnering with the Left, we will report on it.
The left’s (real leftism) ideology isn’t much of a temptation for white evangelical Christianity… but the far-right ideology and means are. (ends-justify-the-means, hatred of poor and minorities, racism, misogyny, violence towards the out group, love of money/worldly success!, support of hierarchies bordering on caste systems, love of tradition for the sake of worshipping tradition, loving comforting and self-serving lies and idolatry of nation…) These are all things that the far-right loves, lives in and spreads and the theologically conservative, culturally conservative white evangelical church in america today is and has been too easily wooed by these things. So, it is HOLY and NEEDED to call attention to that when and where it happens. When or if they every begin to fall for some other things, then we can focus on those things. But at present, they are not. In large measures they have given themselves over to a far-right ideology that is very far from Biblical Christianity…

I really hope you aren’t deflecting with “whataboutism” when confronted with valid concerns regarding such ties and affiliations as between Charlie Kirk (and other Christian Nationalists) and the church. No “whatabout the left” should downplay or justify concerning affiliations.
And this site is full of similar articles about churches and their affiliations and/or support of left-leaning causes (LGBTQIA community, racial and social justice, etc). There are just fewer of them, as it’s been known for decades that the American church is heavily associated with “the right”/conservativism.

Who cares? His opinion, is his opinion. Anyone can say anything they want to, we have a choice to listen to/follow such people, or turn to God on how we are to conduct ourselves. Again, why care more about someone “offending” us than standing up for the attacks on God’s standards, or HIS Son Jesus?
