Just so we are clear. Having worked in the capacity of doing background checks on employees, they are not much help as it comes to this issue. Look at the number of scandals in current churches where there were background checks conducted. Look at schools and teachers and kids. ALL teachers MUST have a background check. That does not stop people from being evil, nor does it prevent hiring predators. Why? Because unless a person has been arrested and or convicted for an offense it does not show up. For example. You want to hire a new Sunday School teacher. You run a background check and it comes back clean. This person has not had any run-ins with the law. So you hire the person with a false sense of security in a background check, and BAM! Something awful happens. My advice is that churches do follow up on those who want to work there, call former employers, etc, but don’t think for one minute that a background check is the end all be all. Watch the people you hire, be observant. And most of all PRAY for GOD’S protection and wisdom. “…except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” Psalm 127:1
