At least seven people are confirmed dead in a shooting this morning at a small Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. The dead include three children and three adult staff, as well as a 28-year-old heavily armed shooter whom police shot dead.

The shooting occurred at The Covenant School, an elementary school with about 200 students and 40 to 50 staff and operates as a ministry of Nashville’s Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Officials said three nine-year-old children with gunshot wounds were transported to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. All three were pronounced dead.

The child victims have been identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs, daughter of Covenant Presbyterian Church Lead Pastor Chad Scruggs. The adult victims are Head of School Katherine Koonce, age 60; substitute teacher, Cynthia Peak, age 61; and custodian, Mike Hill, age 61.

In an afternoon press conference, Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake llamado Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old transgender man and former Covenant student, as the shooter. Police said Hale had no criminal record. While searching Hale’s home, officers found detailed maps and a manifesto of the attack, said Nashville Police Chief John Drake.

Police spokesperson Don Aaron le dijo a los medios that police were called to the school around 10:13 this morning with reports of an active shooter. Two officers entered the school and followed the sound of gunshots to the school’s second floor. There, they engaged and fatally shot the shooter, who had two assault rifles and a handgun, Aaron said. By 10:27, the shooter was dead.

Authorities say the shooter entered the school through a side entrance and proceeded from the first floor to the second floor, firing multiple shots.

According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, this incident marked the 130th mass shooting in the U.S. during 2023.

Families were told to go to Woodmont Baptist Church, at 2100 Woodmont Blvd. in Nashville to be reunited with their students.

  1. Prayers from New Zealand. As usual the politics and anti gun noise makers are quick to hijack the story for their own agenda… Meanwhile where is the fear of God and any acknowledgment that humanity has cast off his requirements and is reaping the consequences. My prayers are for those who have lost people, lost hope and had trust torn to shreds.

I Ask the Lord to silence the political ambulance chasers of all sides and insist on his own house getting on their knees in repentance because unless his own house returns to him there is no point imagining in vain anything secular will stop the spiral into the darkness… Lord for those who have suffered direct loss today, hear their prayers and receive those victims into your eternal care. Shalom in Yeshua from us in New Zealand

    1. Thank you for your admonition for his own to get on our knees in repentance. We can legislate ourselves into oblivion but without true sorrow and repentance among the backslidden church nothing will change. Nothing. The 2nd amendment long ago replaced the 2nd commandment, not in the “country” but in the church. The sin is IN the camp. One nation, under Guns. We are unrepentant Jonahs, Jezebels, Lots wives, Judases and Sauls. I include myself (if MY people.. will turn from THEIR wicked ways) and plead with God that He may forgive our vile sin and not bring the judgment on his house that will come if we don’t truly turn and repent. We may be past that point… even as Abraham asked. Jesus have mercy.

  2. Oh boy. I work in a similar sized Christian school, and we do at times think about the what ifs of something like this. Praying for the school. It is good to know the police responded promptly and took action, likely reducing the loss of life that could have been.
I will be following the story to see what lessons can be learned by other schools. For one thing, how did the shooter get in the door? Was it not locked? All our doors are locked, we use a camera intercom to talk with visitors, and decide to let them in. Students are trained not to open the door for anyone, even if they know them.

  3. “Thoughts and prayers” do exactly zero, they bring back exactly nothing that’s already gone…Common sense gun control laws can and will though.

        1. Yjen Olu:

There seems to be little correlation between gun control laws and lack of gun violence. The problem begins with the heart and mind of a person. Anyone can get a gun if that person wants a gun, regardless of any so-called “gun control” laws.

I believe all guns should be banned, but that is never going to happen this side of the Kingdom. The next best solution is changing peoples’ standing with God so that they can experience his forgiveness, love, and deep compassion. Sin leads to gun violence, and God is the ONLY solution to sin.

        2. Yjen O,

Please provide your source. Tired of Illinois blaming other states for their own problems. You cannot by a gun in another state unless you are a resident in that state, and you cannot take that gun across state lines to resell. The same background checks that occur in Illinois, occur in every other state. The gun control comes down to what you are “allowed” to carry in public and keep in the house.

          1. I am so tired of Chicago being nothing more than a punchline by people who have little interest in actually learning about – much less addressing – the VERY complex, multi-layered issues that have snowballed for YEARS (because, again, Chicago is just a punchline; no one wants to actually fix things here).

Yes, it’s known that Indiana – which has an even bigger gun violence problem – has more lax gun laws than Illinois (same for fireworks; everyone knows to go to Indiana to get your July 4th fireworks). While I do wish we had more “common sense” background checks, I also know we cannot legislate ourselves out of this problem. Unrepentant people will just find a way around the law, all in the name of “freedom.”
Makes me think of scriptures like 1 Peter 2:16 – and the warnings about how we use our “freedom.”

        3. Jamaica is an island, but they have a rate of gun deaths per 100,000 people of 30.72, which is higher than the 24.1 gun deaths per 100,000 recorded in Chicago.
Source: tinyurl.com/44hju59d, where it is said also that St. Louis has a higher rate, despite being across the river from Illinois, where they have strict gun control.

      1. Cynthia, Chicago isn’t one of the most dangerous cities in the nation for per capita gun crimes. Indianapolis, however, is.

          1. If you’re not looking at per capita shootings or firearm deaths, the stats are irrelevant at best.

        1. juan m,

“If you’re not looking at per capita shootings or firearm deaths, the stats are irrelevant at best.”

          Mass Shootings by State

          From Sept. 29, 2018 – May 24, 2022 # Killed & Injured # Killed & Injured (per capita)

          Louisiana 523-11.3
          Illinois 1,082-8.5
          South Carolina 342-6.6
          Pennsylvania 500-3.9
          Ohio 419-3.6
          Georgia 343-3.2
          Texas 836-2.8
          New York 468-2.4
          Florida 504-2.3
          California 854-2.2

Are you trying to include suicide in your stats? What is your source for your claim on Indianapolis?

          1. According to a study by University of Missouri-St. Louis, in 2021 Indianapolis had a rate of 10.6 homicides per 100,000 residents, whereas Chicago’s was 8.2. Other studies I’ve read also support the idea that Chicago is, in terms of gun murders, safer than other midwestern cities including Indianapolis, Cincinnati and my home, Columbus.

          2. Let’s look at per capita firearms deaths by country, why dont we?
Rank Country Firearm-related death rate per 100,000 population per year
            1 Honduras 67.18
            2 Venezuela 59.13
            3 Swaziland 37.16
            4 Guatemala 34.1
            5 Jamaica 30.72
            6 El Salvador 26.77
            7 Colombia 25.94
            8 Brazil 21.2
            9 Panama 15.11
            10 Uruguay 11.52
            11 United States 10.54
Fuente: https://tinyurl.com/yckukkuh , where you’ll also find that the top five countries on the list either ban private gun ownership altogether or else have strict gun control regimes in place. The United States is not in the top 10.

      2. Cynthia: what country is Chicago in? Oh, still the US.

My point still stands: “Thoughts and prayers” do exactly zero, they bring back exactly nothing that’s already gone…Common sense gun control laws can and will though.

    1. Common sense gun laws ? For example ? The shooter purchased the firearms legally after passing the federally mandated background check.

      1. The fact that this, and most, mass shooters used legally acquired guns in their crimes means that the laws we have currently aren’t working to stop mass shootings, so we should consider doing something different if we want different results.

        1. Jen:

I believe you are correct. If we want to keep on getting what we’re getting, we should just keep on doing what we’re doing. And that is unacceptable. Particularly when it comes to young people, they should not have to fear going to school.

My main point still stands: We need to get back to God! We also need to be more intentional about background checks. We should not just be looking at criminal history: We should also be looking at psychiatric/medical history.

Audrey was suffering from an emotional illness. She should not have had the ability to purchase even ONE gun, never mind 7 at various locations.

  4. Nice of you brother Thorpe to pray for our country. We have very serious moral issues tearing our country apart. While I am a 2nd amendment supporter, I do believer it is a time to ban assault rifles , anyone can protect their home with a rifle, shotgun or pistol. New Zealand did after a mass shooting and it has saved lives.

  5. Thank you for this update. Prayers for all affected. I was confused briefly as your photos of the incident are dated March 23 and the shooting occurred today the 27th.

  6. Trust me, my heart breaks for any and all who have been victims of gun violence. In the aftermath of each incident I see the cries of “we have to do something about gun control!” and people want you to sign petitions and/or send monetary contributions, praying, etc.

ALL THIS DOES AND WILL DO EXACTLY NOTHING. The gun lobby has deeper pockets than you’ll ever have collectively or singly.

There is only one way to get anything positive done here: PUBLISH THE NAMES OF THE POLITICIANS WHO VOTE AGAINST REASONABLE GUN CONTROL AND USE THE POWER OF THE VOTE TO GET THEM OUT OF OFFICE. DO NOT VOTE FOR ANY POLITICIAN WHO DOES NOT WANT/SUPPORT GUN CONTROL!!

    ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

    1. You cannot legislate morality. Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. Someone has to aim and pull that trigger. The bottom line is that this person chose to go out and kill people. Violence goes back to the beginning of time when sin entered the picture. I’m sure we will find out soon enough why this person did what they did. This was done by a former student who was clearly angry about something that they felt the need to kill children. When folks want to do serious damage, laws won’t stop them.

      1. If the shooter had no military style weapons used as a means to murder, these victims would still be alive and this horrific tragedy would have not happened.

        1. No Stanley –if the schools doors were locked these people would be alive. If the school had an armed security officer, these people would be alive. There are grants available to schools who want a security officer. Stop trying to take away our guns as the vast majority of us use guns appropriately. For those who don’t, the liberal big city DAs should be locking people up for a long time. If we enforce our laws, we would not have much of a gun issue. There are so many repeat crimes in the big cities. If someone commits a gun crime, they are done. Lock them up for the safety of society. With Biden as President, every pro-Life activist should be armed because Biden’s FBI is coming for them.

          1. it’s reported that the door was locked, but the shooter shot through it. Studies show that armed guards don’t reduce school shootings, but do increase suspensions, expusions and arressts, disproportionately of Black and disabled students. It also increases the death rate- Schools with armed guards have death rates that are 2.83% higher than schools without. https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2022/do-armed-school-police-officers-prevent-shootings/

          2. Scott M,

Watch the video, the school has big glass doors, not security doors, she shot out the floor to ceiling glass and walked in.

      2. I assume that people who say “you can’t legislate morality” also advocate repealing existing laws against murder, theft and rape. Maybe not, but they’re certainly not in favor of establishing other laws against, say, abortion and gay marriage, right?

    2. Jeff:
If someone wants to go kill people, that person will do so in spite of all the gun control measures in the world.
We are suffering from a sin problem. We need to change how we view God. We need to ask for his forgiveness and come back to Him. THAT is the solution to sin.

      1. Cynthia, are you suggesting that every other industrialized country that does not have multiple school shootings a month does NOT have a sin problem? That they’ve got their sin figured out, and their hearts are changed? Because we are the only country who has this much trouble with gun violence, and I’m pretty sure every country has problems with sin and how they view God.

        1. Jen m,

Mass shootings in Germany which has one of the most strictest processes to posses a firearm.

9 March 2023 Gross Borstel district, Hamburg 2023 Hamburg shooting: Six people and an unborn child were killed, and eight others were injured, during a shooting at a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The gunman Philipp Fusz then killed himself.
24 January 2022 Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg Heidelberg University shooting: 18-year-old student Nikolai G. shot and killed one person and wounded four before committing suicide.
19 February 2020 Hanau, Hesse Hanau shootings: 43-year-old far-right extremist Tobias Rathjen shot and killed ten people and wounded five before committing suicide.
24 January 2020 Rot am See, Baden-Württemberg Rot am See shooting: 26-year-old Adrian Schurr shot and killed six people and wounded two before being apprehended by police.
9 October 2019 Halle, Saxony-Anhalt Halle synagogue shooting: 27-year-old neo-Nazi Stephan Balliet shot and killed two people and wounded three before being apprehended by police.
22 July 2016 Munich, Bavaria 2016 Munich shooting: 18-year-old David Sonboly shot and killed nine people and wounded four before committing suicide.
20 August 2013 Dossenheim, Baden-Württembergossenheim shooting A 71-year-old man shot and killed two people and wounded five before committing suicide.
2 March 2011 Frankfurt am Main, Hess 2011 Frankfurt Airport shooting: The 21 year old shooter, an airport employee, was arrested and charged with killing two United States Airmen and seriously wounding two others.
19 September 2010 Lörrach, Baden-WürttemberLörrach hospital shooting: 41-year-old Sabine Radmacher shot and killed two people and wounded eighteen before being shot dead by police.

          1. And we’ve had 130 since January 1. If anything, indicates that stricter laws reduce mass shootings, right?

          2. Jen and John M,

            “And we’ve had 130 since January 1.”

And 7 of those shootings were in Illinois (4 in Chicago) and 1 was in Indiana (Indianapolis).

“This seems to be proving the point that more access to guns leads to more mass shootings, and stricter gun laws lead to drastically fewer mass shootings”

Reduction is not stopping, and a criminal will find a way to get a gun regardless of the law. All of us have to right to defend against those that would do us harm, and you do not have say in how I choose to protect my family. You do not punish those that follow the law because of how the lawless behave.

Should Christians that earnestly follow God, lose their salvation because of the sins of those that choose not to follow God’s laws?

        2. Jen:

The WORLD has a sin problem. It is manifested in China with the torture of Uighyers. It is manifested in Iran with the suppression of women. It is manifested in the USA with the destruction of the nuclear family. It is manifested in Central America with government corruption and civilian murders. It is manifested in Mexico with the trafficking of children and drugs.

I could go on. Gun violence in our nation is a manifestation of sin. How do we stop it? We have stricter background checks, we make guns less accessible, we put gun sellers in prison for life…

But, ultimately, we get back to God. This goes for the whole world.

          1. This is a deflection. Yes, the world has a sin problem, no one here is denying that. But when challenged about why, if it’s a sin problem, is america the only country that has regular mass shootings, you pivot to other things. Why are you so invested in not addressing america’s gun problem when it’s the number one cause of death for children?

Guns aren’t the only problem, but it’s certainly one of the most pressing that we need to address. Other countries can address the way they harm people- we do not get a pass because we’re doing less harm in those areas, since the harm we’re doing with guns is incredible.

          2. Interesting that you identify “destruction of the nuclear family,” as America’s manifestation of sin in a discussion about our propensity to mow each other down with AR-15s. Let’s keep our eye on the ball, not deflect.

  7. seeing the shooter in photos that appear to be happy and productive. what turns this person into a killer. The shooter have parents and I am sure they are heartbroken at what their child did. My questions are WHAT turns people into this form of evil.

    1. Gary:

Sometimes mental illness changes people into unrecognizable monsters. Often, those “monsters” need to be institutionalized and seriously medicated. And, trust me, there are always warning signs. Always.

      1. Thank you Cynthia. You made me think of client I had. Always paranoid always questioning why I’m looking at him a certain way. Always confused at why people seem to avoid him. One day the receptionist said (xxx) is in the conference room and he isn’t the same. He came to apologize for his behavior to all of us. He said they found a tumor and they removed it and now is in recovery. All I could think of doing was hug him and be happy for him. Sometimes life really sucks. Maybe she has an undiagnosed tumor or something like that.

      2. Cynthia, there is no evidence at this point that mental illness played any part in this shooting. It may have, but until there is confirmation of that, it’s a narrative that is harmful to people with mental illness who are far more likely to be victims of crime than cause harm to others.

        1. “ there is no evidence at this point that mental illness played any part in this shooting.”

Jen, words often have nuanced meanings and “illness” is one of them. Illness can refer to a state of being unhealthy with an inference of wickedness or unpleasantness.

The actions of this woman in her identifying as a man, and her subsequent behavior using firearms were nothing less than evil that was produced from ungodly thinking. Nothing involved in this produced or stemmed from the righteousness of God (health or lack of “diss”ease).

The discussions revolving around a choice of weapon are mere distractions and purposeful misdirections, imo.

More pertinent questions would ask why are so many of these perps heavily medicated on SSRI’s, already in the FBI’s line of sight (identification/communication), influenced by hearing voices (like the perp who recently stabbed Ron Paul’s staffer, like so many of the mass shooters in the last two decades have also claimed)?

Did you know technologically speaking, the avenues of shaping and controlling someone’s thoughts and actions (overriding “free will”) are available to those who intend to bring about chaos? Have you researched any of these in depth?

There was a West Point professor five or six years ago that gave a long lecture posted on YouTube in which he admitted science has the ability to erase old memories and implant new ones in people’s mind via bacteria as the medium.

If technology supposedly doubles every 9 or 10 months, then how far beyond this is it today? Do you really think sociopaths and psychopaths in power would be using this technology for the good of society?

          1. Mental illness has very specific meaning, and involves specific diagnosis. It should not be bandied about as a cause until there is supporting evidence, because it harms people who are mentally ill, and already stigmatized.

        2. Jen:

She was seeing a doctor for an “emotional illness.” It is also becoming more apparent over time (research still needed) that transgenderism is a form of mental illness.

          1. Transgenderism is not mental illness, though it may be cooccuring with other mental illnesses. Again, mental illness has a specific definition, and unless things are listed in the DSM-5, they are NOT mental illness. Please stop using the term to mean things that are not within it’s definition.

        3. Jen:

This is from DSM criteria. You indicated that Transgenderism is not a form of mental illness. Based on the following information, perhaps it is…..

“The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR)1 provides for one overarching diagnosis of gender dysphoria with separate specific criteria for children and for adolescents and adults.

The DSM-5-TR defines gender dysphoria in adolescents and adults as a marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and their assigned gender, lasting at least 6 months, as manifested by at least two of the following:

A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and primary and/or secondary sex characteristics (or in young adolescents, the anticipated secondary sex characteristics)
A strong desire to be rid of one’s primary and/or secondary sex characteristics because of a marked incongruence with one’s experienced/expressed gender (or in young adolescents, a desire to prevent the development of the anticipated secondary sex characteristics)
A strong desire for the primary and/or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender
A strong desire to be of the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender)
A strong desire to be treated as the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender)
A strong conviction that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender)

Sounds a lot like “Audrey,” doesn’t it?

          1. “Sounds a lot like “Audrey,” doesn’t it?”

Yes, to those seeking the truth, and not validation of a personnel opinion, or in fear of upsetting others and being labeled.

        4. I dunno, Jen. If a woman announces that she is a man, then goes to a school , shoots his and/or her way inside, then murders six people before being gunned down herself by the police, that’s kind of prima facie evidence that there is some kind of mental health issue at work;

  8. forget about gun control. it’s just sound bites for the masses. Here is Gun control. But it will never happen. As a marine I spent 6 weeks out of 13 weeks in boot camp in combat school and rifle range. Spent weeks learning how to properly use and shoot and clean an m16, m14 m60, .45 and toss grenades. here is the only gun control that is needed. SHOTGUNS: single or double barrel. RIFLES: BOLT OR LEVER ACTION and no more than a 5-round load. REVOLVERS: single or double action. BUT this will never happen. WHY??? because our good church going members of congress and senate are too well paid to allow this to occur. Yeah, thoughts and prayers only work BEFORE the action.

  9. I hear all this boloney that gun control will not work as it is a SIN problem…..

So in Germany with quality gun control has roughly 300 people murdered per year…. and despite all the Evangelicals living in the U.S., the U.S. must be really screwed up and extremely sinful as so much gun violence exists, and Germany must have less sin as so few people are shot per year ……

Gun control is needed in the U.S. as many Americans do not manage very well the guns they currently have….

    1. Gun control in Germany ? Are you kidding me. Gun control in Germany was first enacted in 1935 by Adolf Hitler.

“ This year will go down in history . For the first time a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer , our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future “.

Two years latter Hitler ordered mass gun confiscation. The holocaust started slow but by 1939 it had the efficiency Hitler wanted. By the end of the war 6 million Jews and approximately another 6 million other persons had been murdered by the Nazi government.

Democide murdered 262 million people last century alone. More than all wars combined . “Mass shooting” and “gun crime” doesn’t even claim as many lives as auto accidents or as alcohol or drug use.

    2. Several things:
-Figures I find online indicate a higher number of gun deaths in Germany than you are quoting
-Germany is 1/4 the population of the US
-The vast majority of US gun owners are responsible. A not often reported figure in the media is the times that concealed carry gun people stop violence or shootings with their gun.
-I still maintain violent video games play a factor. How do we think shooters practice aim and willingness to shoot people?

      – Greg

      1. greg,

The things I read is that the majority of U.S. gun owners do not store their weapons properly. In other countries, that would cause a weapon to removed from the home. Also most Americans are poorly trained.

Yes violent games/movies may play a factor… but it would then seem it mainly affects Americans.

In terms of numbers, it would be better to use a death rate …. I am quoting the below from Pew research:

The U.S. gun death rate was 10.6 per 100,000 people in 2016, the most recent year in the study, which used a somewhat different methodology from the CDC. That was far higher than in countries such as Canada (2.1 per 100,000) and Australia (1.0), as well as European nations such as France (2.7), Germany (0.9) and Spain (0.6). But the rate in the U.S. was much lower than in El Salvador (39.2 per 100,000 people), Venezuela (38.7), Guatemala (32.3), Colombia (25.9) and Honduras (22.5), the study found. Overall, the U.S. ranked 20th in its gun fatality rate that year.

I will not address Royer’s comments as he went straight to Germany under a fascist government which seems typical of some on the far right.

      2. Greg, if violent video games were a factor, Korea and Japan would have the world’s highest rates of gun violence.

What could be a possible difference between our country and theirs?

        1. I mentioned, maybe in a later post, that besides violent video games, the issue of violent movies and TV. I do not know how that compares with other countries.
I am not sure we need more gun control laws, but rather need to do a better job of enforcing the ones we already have. That often would have blocked shooters from getting the guns they used.
I would not agree about most are poorly trained and most guns are poorly stored. A popular item for sale at some stores around is here is a gun safe, which many buy to store their guns in. I have a number of friends who have a concealed carry permit, and I can assure you they had significant training before getting the permit (by the way, law enforcement around here supports concealed carry). Granted, I live in a more rural area, where gun ownership is different than in urban areas. Guns here are mainly sporting arms, plus the concealed carry ones. It would be unusual to see the assault style rifle for sale around this part of Ohio.
I certainly do not want to see more shootings, but the issue is broader than just more gun control.

    3. gordon:

The USA is one of the most diverse nations on the planet. As a consequence, our society is fractured on many fronts. Until we get back to God, we will never see a change in our gun violence statistics. Guns are the weapon of choice for many because they are easily accessible. We need stricter background checks to prevent guns getting into the wrong hands. However, first and foremost, we need to return to our Creator.

      1. Claiming diversity as a cause of societal violence is a deeply racist, white supremacist talking point. I’d expect it on Stormfront message boards, but I’m a little alarmed to see it here.

        1. Juan:

The truth is never racist. It is simply the truth. You may not like it, but it is a factual statement that the USA is incredibly diverse. There are religious groups living in Michigan who sacrifice animals as part of their religious rituals. Multiple other examples of diverse views and opinions abound. It is part of the fabric of the USA.

If you cannot handle the truth, it is not my problem. It is yours. Claiming it is racist reveals an incredible lack of maturity and wisdom.

          1. cinthia-

Please explain how diversity is the direct source of violence.

I hate that I knew it was just a matter of time until the “if only we were less diverse, we would have less violence”
argument showed up…on a Christian site, no less. This is just an offshoot of “there’s too many non-whites around” and “no more mixing!” We should be better than this as believers.

God made us all different races, colors, nationalities, and the like. And guess what? His church is diverse too! Sounds like you need to talk to Him about it before you get to heaven. Or else be prepared to be disappointed with all the diversity that will be there.

  10. We constantly talk about gun control laws, taking away guns, comparing our gun control laws, to other countries and their crime rates, etc, etc. When will we consider the effect of our violent entertainment and video games, and compare THAT to other countries. America has a steady diet of violence and killing in our TV shows, movies, video games. I have read that one of the common factors in shooters was regular playing of violent video games, bullying is another factor. I have also read the the military uses video games to desensitize soldiers to killing. If that is correct, such games should not be part of our entertainment.
Also, the Nashville Police should be congratulated for quick action, which surely reduced what the tragedy could have been.

    Several other thoughts:
-I am not a big fan of school resource officers. While they provide some day to day benefits in school safety, they are often a point of failure in school shootings, Uvalde Texas being a particularly tragic example, as was the school in Florida.
-Being a school technology director, my responsibilities include our phone system, security cameras, and door entry units. As such, I study shootings like this one, look for any points of failure, and how we can avoid those. I have literally had nightmares about someone breaking into our school and setting off fireworks that literally shake the building.
-While school shootings are very tragic, and I would be heartbroken to lose any of the dear children in our school, we murder many more babies in the womb every day in our country.
-Extra hugs in our school this week!

    – Greg

    1. I forgot several points:
-I have read that the shooter expects to die in the shooting, giving rise to the term ‘suicide by cop’
-As part of our emergency planning, our school has focused on how fast can we hide/lockdown, and how fast help can arrive. We have a number of communication options and classroom doors are usually locked.
-Besides studying shootings like this for points of failure, it is also useful to see what worked right.

      – Greg

      1. a tragic thing to be aware of is that most school shooters are former students, which means they were in all of the school shooter training drills and have practiced every strategy that students and teachers will be doing in a shooting event, making them all the more lethal.

  11. “We’ve interviewed the parents of Audrey Hale, and we’ve determined that Audrey bought seven firearms from five different local gun stores here legally,” Drake said during a news briefing. “They were legally purchased. Three of those weapons were used yesterday during the horrific tragedy.”

So how does a person suffering from an emotional illness gain access LEGALLY to guns in the United States?

    1. because the background checks and gun laws do not prevent it. our current gun laws and background checks prevent very few people who want to own guns from owning them legally. The vast majority of weapons used in mass shootings were purchased legally. We do not have the will to enact laws that keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them. https://www.statista.com/statistics/476461/mass-shootings-in-the-us-by-legality-of-shooters-weapons/

    1. Thank you for this link. This sexual scandals within churches and their affiliates must be dealt with. Still waiting for John MacArthur to acknowledge this.

  12. Marín:

ANY cultures that do not affirm the dignity of every single human being are going to be prone to violence. In a culture like China, the violence tends to be directed from the government to its own citizens. When Sweden admitted Middle Eastern immigrants in vast numbers, Sweden turned into the Rape Capital of Europe.

Not all cultures view life in the same way. Not all cultures view animals in the same way. Not all cultures view women in the same way. Not all cultures view people in the same way.

What is my point? It is simple: Diverse cultures will only do well together through God’s intervention. That is why heaven will be so awesome – sin’s manifestations will be gone and people will be united by God’s love.

Now, in this fallen world, cultures do not always blend well together for the simple reason that sin reigns supreme in many, if not most. So, to answer your question: “Please explain how diversity is the direct source of violence,” I would say that SIN is the direct source of violence. Diversity of cultures only becomes a problem when the cultures involved do not view God in the same way and do not realize that sin leads to violence against all.

Does this make sense? Diversity in heaven will illustrate that God came to save all people, regardless of cultural differences. The Bible makes clear that we are to love all people. Salvation is the goal; diversity is a by-product.

    1. Thank you for clarifying – because your earlier post implied DIVERSITY was the problem, not the sin.
It’s interesting that you leave out how here in the US, our culture tends to value “the Second Amendment over the Second Commandment.” Our personal freedoms are more valuable than the collective impact on the lives of others (again thinking of 1 Peter 2:16). Our violence is increasingly the “mass shooting” type against one another, with us spending more time justifying why the shootings happen than comforting those grieving.
Let’s not act like ours is the “right” culture while all the others have it wrong. That is moving into the unBiblical concept of Christian nationalism.

      1. Marín,
I am sorry I wasn’t clear in my initial comments. For my part, I believe only Jesus can save this world from itself. I also believe that not all cultures are created equal. Judeo-Christian principles based on Biblical teaching seem to provide the best template for a good life. Do you agree?

        1. Thanks for the clarification. Not sre I understand the concept of cultures being “equal” – do you mean equal in value? How do you define culture? The reason this makes me uncomfortable is that many have taken these sorts of comments to mean that the American way – including the American way of practicing Christianity – is THE best and only way to live life.
To answer your question: I believe the Bible provides God’s way – THE way – for how to live life. Various cultures translate certain Biblical principles in a different way. Even within US-based denominations, you’ll find culture clashes and debates on what this looks like and ‘who is right’. I also believe these sorts of clashes have caused us (as American Christians) to often miss the point.
