A pastor from Arizona who was shot in the head while street preaching is now awake and has been moved out of the ICU.

26-year-old Hans Schmidt was promoting Victory Chapel First Phoenix Church on a street corner on Nov. 15, 2023, when the shooting occurred.

Schmidt, a former military combat medic, husband and father to two young children, was in critical condition, and his church said he was in desperate need of a miracle.

About two weeks ago, his wife, Zulya Schmidt, posted a photo of Hans awake in his hospital bed, surrounded by his family.

“In the blink of an eye, our lives were changed. You are a living miracle,” said his wife, Zulya Schmidt, in the post. “Every day I am amazed seeing you hold our baby boy once again. Waving at our baby girl. You have a long way to go, but God will carry us through.”

In an interview with CBN News, Schmidt says she was able to keep her faith through all of this thanks to the prayers she received from friends, family and even strangers across the country.

“That’s the only way I can explain it. There have been moments where I’m like, how am I this okay? I even feel guilty for not crying,” said Schmidt in the interview. “I know God has a plan in all of this because there is no other way to explain it.”

Schmidt says her husband, Hans, has made a lot of progress.

“In the days of progress, there are still difficult days,” Schmidt added. “The brain is such a sensitive thing that we don’t know what is going to happen. We’re hopeful, we’re praying, and we’re contending for a supernatural recovery, but there is still so much unknown.”

Victory Chapel First Phoenix Church says while Hans continues to fight and work hard at his recovery, prayers are still needed and highly valued by him and his family, as the journey is not over.

  1. I have been a recipient of many miracles in my life. If one does not believe that God Exists , there is no hope for them unless prayers of everyone cause them to see ! They will believe if opening their eyes and really seeing for the 1st time ! Let us all pray for those that still walk in the dark .
